I love the great outdoors and the bush is my jam but when a mate asks you to go fishing, you don’t say for how long, you ask, when are we leaving? This is a relaxed story about two hiking mates, Ray & Dave having a fun day on the water in the Firth of Thames. If you judge a good day's fishing by the size of the fish, then you might be disappointed, but if you judge it by the fun you had, then you will enjoy watching this video to the end. We paid the $15 Waikawau boat ramp fee and headed out to our first spot where within five minutes I caught and released the first snapper (not that I am competitive). Ray caught the next, which was small but of legal size, kept for the catch and cook video just in case it was the only. While it was fun catching and releasing (ensure you have wet hands or towel), we needed bigger fish to take home and so we moved further up the Firth. Our second spot produced some good-sized snapper. Anything around 30cm was released and so the time passed until it all just went quiet. We spied a large flotilla of boats (12 in fact) further up the Firth and thought that with more burley and more bait in the water that it might be attracting more fish, and we were right. It was an interesting revelation that I took no pleasure in taking of the life of my catch. I suspect this has developed over time as a result of spending so much time within nature that the taking of a life from nature has become heartfelt. I appreciate that this is where our food source comes from and I have no judgment for those that do enjoy doing so. It was fun catching the day's only kahawai on a small rod and before long we had nine snapper and the one kahawai between us, being all that we required to feed our families for a night. To save time I cooked the first snapper with its skin and scales on and added kumara roti, mushrooms, onions, and garlic for a quick and satisfying late lunch cook-up. Once back home, Ray demonstrated a better way to fillet, while Jack the cat looked longing on. This is not my normal hiking or bushcraft video but I am Outdoorsman Dave NOT Bushman Dave and so I hope that this video adds to the diversity and entertainment value of my channel for your watching pleasure. #fishingnz #fishingcatch&cook #catchandcook
