In 2018 I was asked to perform in Ladakh in the Himalayas by philanthropist, Desmond Gentle. I asked award winning musical team Michael Ward and Philip Henderson, to compose a piece which reflected the region and its environment. The song title, Baadal Badal is Hindi for the “clouds” which frame the Himalayan region. Further significance comes from the fact that accompanying Harpist, Siobhan Brady and I used Microsoft technology to rehearse while in different countries. Microsoft being synonymous with “the cloud”. The record-pending performance took place at a height of 3,495 metres. A few days after returning to London from the tour, Desmond Gentle passed away suddenly. The challenging altitude too demanding for his health. Desmond very much wanted this to be the Highest Operatic Harp performance. As part of this trip Desmond also transported a grand piano from London, England, which he donated to the SECMOL Institute for Environmental Studies in Ladakh. The team comprising Anna Dawn Ray, Jan-Bas van Riel, Chip Phillips, Sean Brady, Tibby, Siobhan Brady and I have pledged to carry on the work of this determined and compassionate man.
