Harvard professor and epidemiologist Michael Mina, MD, PhD, explains the relative cost of frequent, at-home COVID-19 testing (using inexpensive paper strip antigen tests) to allow schools and businesses to re-open. Michael Mina, MD Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Mina is also a core member of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics (CCDD) and an Associate Medical Director in Clinical Microbiology. Dr. Mina's bio is here: https://ccdd.hsph.harvard.edu/people/michael-mina/ We have no financial disclosures related to any medical products. MedCram has a strong interest in curbing this pandemic and safely re-opening schools and our economy, and we believe Dr. Mina's approach to testing could be effective - especially compared to the current testing approach in the United States. @wendyeames5758منذ 4 سنوات Can they sell them without fda approval 'for entertainment value only', nod, nod, wink, wink? I'd love to have a handful of these so I could id="hidden2" class="buttons"> visit my only grandchild. I'm over 60 & my daughter is an ER RN in a hospital outside of Detroit, where she's done curbside testing & worked in the covid ward, so it's nerve-wracking thinking she could get sick at any time & give it to everyone, including her baby. My husband recently had a heart attack & she came home to visit him, the 15-minute test you can get here at a lab costs $150. We would have loved to have this inexpensive home test. ....وسعت 12

@robklein583منذ 4 سنوات Thx Mike. Both you and Roger talk common sense about this infection. You both take a complex subject and analyze in a methodical way to come to completely id="hidden3" class="buttons"> logical conclusions and recommendations. Unfortunately, all politicians are a little screwy so your rational conclusions will be ignored by them. But acted on by us, the rational viewers, if given a chance. Thanks for these videos. They are a lot of hard work, but really appreciated. Stay safe. ....وسعت 1

@robklein583منذ 4 سنوات Mike reminds me of Albert Einstein in his analyzing ability. Here's a short story about Albert to brighten your day. One day in primary school Albert id="hidden7" class="buttons"> was talking and giggling in class. The teacher said "ALBERT, stop talking in class! You have so much time on your hands why don't you add up all the numbers from 1 to 100 and give me the answer before you go home after class!" Albert looked at her and thought for a few seconds, then said "the answer is 5050". The teacher said "how on earth did you add that up in 5 seconds?" Albert explained that 0+100 is 100, 1+99 is 100, 2+98 is 100, and continue adding like that for 50 times until you are left with 50 in the middle. 100 fifty times and then add 50 to total 5050. The teacher left him alone after that for the rest of the day. ....وسعت

@qwertyFUBARمنذ 4 سنوات Agree with others here to label test strips "for entertainment only". Go for it, combine with State lottery system and bring in your positive id="hidden8" class="buttons"> test for a free scratch lottery ticket. Or have a "horoscope reading" printed in invisible ink on a card that comes with the test, when wet (with a urine sample) the horoscope will appear. And also maybe a little maze for kids to solve. Just like cereal boxes and restaurant kid's meal handouts. ....وسعت 1

@felixcat9455منذ 4 سنوات Do we really know if these paper strip tests are even remotely sensitive enough at the point of contagion though? Seems we need to do a clinical study. id="hidden11" class="buttons"> If they pick up says 80% of people at the point of contagion that could be a game changer. @davidcann8788منذ 4 سنوات No need to worry if it's "too expensive". What is important is whether the real resources are there to manufacture and distribute such tests. id="hidden12" class="buttons"> Materials, people, factories, logistics. The Federal government has instant capacity to spend - dollars are not a real resource. The question is whether these tests are effective and what is required to get them out there and used properly, and results reported. ....وسعت

@loveforsberg530منذ 4 سنوات It is often pointed out that rapid tests wouldn't be supervised by medical personell. That's excellent. @robertdavies1608منذ 4 سنوات Forget home use - a 10 min paper test would allow restaurants, spectators sports, movies, schools, universities, etc all to reopen without capacity constraints id="hidden16" class="buttons"> - you get tested before entering, if clear - you enter, if not; you will be reported and sent home to quarantine. All employees of these establishments would be given this test daily. This one action would have an immediate positive effect on the economy. @michaelandreas2177منذ 4 سنوات A cheap daily test sounds good in theory, and could work. But I doubt that it would work, because the same people who are anti-maskers would become anti-testers. id="hidden17" class="buttons"> The same people who would go to work with the flu because they need the income would not want to test.
Maybe it would work if employers and businesses that have difficulty with social distancing (for example barbers, doctors, dentists, etc) would require a test before entry would be allowed.

@Randy1743منذ 4 سنوات Seems this information needs to get to the CDC and other government officials. I would rather take a simple test instead of being forced to wear a largely ineffective cumbersome mask whenever I go to a store.

@f.n.schlub2269منذ 4 سنوات Doctor Mina, the places where we need these tests are at the front doors of schools and industries every morning. overseen by a tested-negative-that-day id="hidden19" class="buttons"> mouth breathing knuckle-dragger who doesn't believe in exceptions(people lie). Those who pass can school/work that day; those who don't,go home.Testing also at the end of school days and shifts is ideal.
It IS cumbersome and challenging in terms of personnel/workflow management, but it would address both public health concerns AND slowly get the economy moving again, especially in businesses sophisticated enough to manage a reduced and rotating workforce.

@firstnamelastname2669منذ 4 سنوات This is now a government priority in the UK, seemingly largely down to the enthusiasm of PM Johnson himself. However there has been a strong push-back id="hidden22" class="buttons"> from parts of the expert community, such as #"Dr David Strain, clinical senior lecturer at the University of Exeter and chairman of the BMA's medical academic staff committee, said the mass-testing strategy is "fundamentally flawed" and is "based on technology that does not, as yet, exist ( . Prof Sir Spiegelhalter, a statistician at the University of Cambridge, was on the prime radio news warning the volume of false positives would render the scheme essentially useless. I don't see why those getting a positive test couldn't retest an hour later, but whatever it would be interesting to hear Dr Mina's response. ....وسعت
