Joaquin Murietta was once a rich and well-respected landowner in California. He has, however, lost his farm, his wife, and all he cared about. He joins a diverse gang of men paid to transport a wealthy man's wife away from the bandit-infested countryside to safety in San Francisco, embittered and questioning his former trust in God and man.
