@greenbyrdd8308منذ 2 سنوات Chrissie is right. This kind of representation has damaging outcomes that continue to reverberate to this very day. @Princess-ep5hiمنذ 2 سنوات Thank you for speaking on how “ the strong black woman archetype “ negatively affects us in real life. Two years ago, my mom took me to the hospital for chest pains and the nurses and the doctor did not take me serious despite the fact that I was bent over in pain and I was CRYING. I was 24 years old an adult but I could not drive myself to the hospital so my mom took me. My mom had to speak up for them to finally do something. They had me waiting just to get a room. My mom had to ask them for pain killers as well. Thank God it turns out I was experiencing chest pains due to stress from my old job not a heart attack but if it was I could have DIED. Also I’m a young dark skin black woman and I’m very short and petite. I’m an introvert and I’m quiet and yet my entire life I was treated like a man and anytime I did try to speak up I was “ aggressive “ and “ had an attitude “. I was even mistreated at my old job by a white customer who said I was “ scary “ because I defended myself when she wrongfully accused me of being a thief. She also threatened to call the police on me. I know this may sound ridiculous but I’m scared of white women and I don’t trust most of them. Im also scared of most men after I was SA’d and harassed multiple times. I’m literally scared to go out by myself because I’m afraid of being mistreated. I have to ask my boyfriend to come out with me. I even had to get a remote job because I refuse to risk my life again working in the office. This is why the strong black woman archetype is DANGEROUS. ....وسعت 512

Her hair id="hidden6" class="buttons"> should have been more red, the lighting should have been brighter, her clothes should have sparkled and her makeup should have been the way she looks on red carpets. @farmhouseonthemountainمنذ 2 سنوات That you are a 'child free by choice' woman and can still see the agenda against traditional black motherhood speaks volumes to your integrity id="hidden7" class="buttons"> and I really appreciate you touching on that part. Is it not okay that some of us stay home to take care of our families has been traditional for every other race of women? No. Not for us. If we want to be seen in a "positive" light in our motherhood, it has to be the strong, single mother underdog archetype. There are so many levels to the social oppression we face by way of the media and you don't have to be a victim or self hating to see it. ....وسعت 253

    @MsTemptationمنذ 2 سنوات I agree with everything you’ve said.
What people don’t get is that you can’t compare white women roles to black women because white women are allowed to be versatile, thus no one depiction of her is taken as a generalized depiction of all white women.
So she can be strong, she can be soft and no one will automatically assume anything about her based on these attributes.
But (dark skinned)black women aren’t being given that same courtesy.
We’re often depicted as loud and troublesome or masculine women.
So any movie that reinforces this doesn’t help our image.
We are not stronger than anyone else and we have feelings and can feel pain and remorse.
We have soft romantic sides that when watered shows our glow.
I’m not here to be anyones warrior woman, nor some ride or die chick.
I cry when I’m sad or hurt and I’m not going to allow anyone to abuse me mentally because they’re under the false impression that I can take it due to my being a dark skinned black woman.

@Convinceyamamaمنذ 2 سنوات My only rebuttal is the fact that Halle went through the audition process and got the part fairly. I think you could argue that if an equally talented id="hidden11" class="buttons"> darker skinned women auditioned for the role of Ariel, she might’ve not gotten the role based on her complexion alone. @LearnAsYouGo.منذ 2 سنوات I myself am conflicted about the role that Angela Bassett plays on 911 even though I love that show. She’s depicted as mainly masculine but they do also show her as feminine SOMETIMES. She’s in an interracial marriage but he’s a former drunk that accidentally killed lots of ppl her ex husband turned out to be gay/DL. It’s hard for dsbw actresses in Hollywood. They need/want to work. I totally agree with Chrissie’s pov on this. I didn’t become feminine until my late teens/early 20’s because I always thought that I was just a tomboy but I’m really not. The director said she was the first to auditioned she set the bar so high with her singing and acting when she sang "part of your world" nobody else that auditioned after came close. @Jenny-fl5cnمنذ 2 سنوات why should it be called queen instead of Woman king?
In most African tribe, the word for a queen regent translates as "woman king". For id="hidden39" class="buttons"> example, a queen regent in the Igbo tribe is called "eze nwaanyi" which means "woman king". A queen consort is called names that show her status as the wife of the king. In Igbo land, the wife of the king/queen consort is called "Ugo eze" which means "pride of the king". I hope this makes sense.
Im summary, unlike the English language that uses the same word for the female regent and the female consort of a male regent, it is not so in some other societies. "Ugo Eze" and "Eze Nwaanyi" are not the same

She didn't have a single ball gown id="hidden56" class="buttons"> even though in the cartoon she has several gorgeous dresses. Compare Halle's red carpet looks to the basic outfits we got in the movie. Hollywood is determined to make us look average and ugly. @keelhe893منذ 2 سنوات Chrissie, imo you gave a balanced critique of this film. I’m glad you actually watched it because it was a beautiful work of cinematic art.
It’s true that the macro-opinion of the movie can continue to hurt the bw image being once again the warrior trope. I want bw represented in more feminine beautiful roles too
IMO I walked away appreciating the vulnerability and humanity of these women. It actually showed that despite the warrior physique they found themselves not being strong at all. Each character was flawed which made it relatable & interesting . I felt for the people who watched the film that it is a conversation piece. It truly depicted the dilemma of the bw. She desires femininity but is forced to be masculine because of her circumstances and suffers for it but somehow overcomes and finds success and femininity.
Each character had depth and nuance that I didn’t see depicted about bw before on the big screen which I appreciated because that shows these actresses’ talent when they play complex roles.
To add, it did display various kinds of bw and different interactions from sisterhood, jealousy to enemies etc. or indifference
For me this movie was awesome but I can understand that maybe the timing wasn’t the best and we want more bw in beauty roles and depicted in positive feminine characters to change the narrative. I stand in agreement with that but still felt this movie was great and want the run of the meal Shero film

@catwoman7694منذ 2 سنوات I think what made it eye opening to me was a lot of the movie audience was older blk women. Out of the 60-65% of blk women who went to see the woman king id="hidden63" class="buttons"> 40-45% was blk women over the age of 35. So that mean young blk women aren’t seeing the movie. I think that’s good if you don’t want masculine images to be seen by younger blk women. ....وسعت 54

@sponsponm1منذ 2 سنوات This movie should be boycotted firstly its historically inaccurate. The Dahomey were not fighting to stop slavery. They were fighting to reinforce it, id="hidden65" class="buttons"> due to the lucrative nature of the buisiness. They were slave traders themselves.
The dahomey amazons werent only made up of female soldiers out of the 12000 soldiers half were women. And they didnt engage in hand to hand combat with men lol. They had guns, canons and artillary given to them by their European counterparts. Thats how they were able to conquer neighbouring tribes
This movie was directed by white feminists what agenda do you think they were trying promote?

@bitokay147منذ 2 سنوات So glad we are speaking about how africans sold their own people ( til this day sex workers in africa will share this FYI ) which is how we got to America id="hidden66" class="buttons"> in the first place. I have heard some historians say that some of us were in America way before British, Native americans. I would not be surprised. This world started with one land at the very beginning any way. But to know that it is not about race back then , it is really about power and money. Always will be. Learning your history is so crucial. BW date out - dont make one race an enemy. Today you should just be surrounded by good people no colorist antiracist people. Every race has blood on their hands historically. Stay away from the agendas and distractions and live your life beautifully. ....وسعت 4

@olabmar498منذ 2 سنوات I completely agree with your opinion. I am very pro eradicate the SJW, masculine image of black women. But this film was something else. Even though the id="hidden67" class="buttons"> name of the film - the woman king and the very basis of the film- women warrior screams masculinity, each character showed some level of pronounced femininity. And I feel like the actors where strategically picked as well for their beauty and talent. The women were so breathtaking each of them…
I also think that eventually, black women playing soft feminine roles will come, but black movies just have to break in first through high quality- cinematic, multidimensional, aspirational “highly supported by black audiences”, prideful movies such as black panther and woman king. But here, black people are ruling out this movie without realizing that it could be a build up to what we really want in the near future. And Hollywood will see that we don’t support our own movies and make it harder for the next potential big movies to be made, and that’s if they will ever be made. Just something to think about.
