Sometimes when the veins are very close to the surface. It is difficult to see them on ultrasound, but easy to see them with trans illumination. Trans illumination is where I put a very bright light on the surface of the skin that reflects light through the tissues. The vein appears very dark, like putting a flashlight on your hand. It makes the tissue sort of glow, highlighting the veins. They can be accessed better, and again, I can see where the solution is going. I don't use any topical anesthesia because that actually hurts more than the needles themselves do. My patients tell me that they can occasionally feel mild burning or stinging sensation from the solution, but it goes away very quickly. I have never had a patient unable to tolerate the procedure due to pain. If you have any further questions about any of the procedures, please feel free to contact us.
